For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together.  For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad.

News from Memory Lane

Happy 6 month Anniversary! On September 28th we celebrate our first 6 months together. We now have 9 tenants, 12 full and part-time employees, a small group of volunteers and one cat. It has been an exciting time for all of us and we are looking forward to the next 6 months.

Memory Lane continues to be very flexible meeting the changing and multiple levels of memory care needs. The staff has received ongoing dementia training on a regular basis at our monthly memory care meetings. Topics have included negative behaviors, bathing techniques and what to do if a tenant is not able to advocate on their own behalf.
The tenants attend exercise class 7 days a week. On the first Wednesday of every month we change it up and call it “Wellness Wednesday”. The tenants participate in a short health related presentation and have their vital signs and weights taken. The topics have included: The Importance of hydration; How, why and when to use sunscreen; benefits of exercise and fall & hip fracture prevention.

Please feel free to stop in and take part in any of our activities or just have a cup of coffee and visit.

Activities NF & Assisted Living

The weather has been so nice the last few weeks and we have been getting outdoors to enjoy it. Unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate as planned for our State Fair Event. Everything was going so well and everyone seemed to be enjoying the Fair Foods, the petting zoo and the activities but that cloud that loomed over us was not going to move away without giving us all a shower. With everyone’s help and patience we were able to move the event inside and finished with a great performance by the Adel Dance and Tumbling Club. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for our upcoming Oktoberfest which is planned for the 15th of October. We will again have a BBQ (always good food) and live Accordion music presented by “Fat Cat”. For those that have not been to one of his performances need to come because he puts on an excellent show.
We are looking forward to the beautiful fall weather and all the upcoming fun events.

Take Care.

Greetings sun burnt friends!

What a HOT summer it has been and I have a feeling it will drag on for a few more weeks! Keep your fingers crossed for a mild winter!
With the heat we have had, our residents have enjoyed sitting outside on the patio and going for walks outside the building. What is better than eating watermelon on a hot summer day!

September is the ending of Summer and beginning of Fall, and with that, our activities will be changing too. We are looking forward to decorating for Fall & the holidays. Now that the weather has cooled off, we will be enjoying the outside even more and taking a few more outings before winter hits. Enjoying the fall flowers at Earl May, viewing the amazing art work at The Des Moines Art Center, going to the park and feeding ducks, and having an end of the summer picnic are some of our planned outings.
Halloween is creeping up on us also! What a fun way to celebrate by going to the pumpkin patch and carving or painting our pumpkins! Our volunteers will join us in the fun.
We would also like to welcome our newest resident, Nora Leverich; she moved in at the end of August and has been a pleasant addition to our family. VincentAlong with Nora, we also have another addition to the family, meet Vincent, we rescued this kitty; he has fit right in with our residents. We call him “Vincent VanGough” because of his missing ear. Be sure to stop in & see him.

Recipe Corner

Garlic Prime Rib

Garlic Prime Rib

“Quick and easy marinade and so tasty, I was trusted with this recipe but I can’t keep it to myself!”

Ingredients

  • 1 (10 pound) prime rib roast
  • 10 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme

Directions

  1. Place the roast in a roasting pan with the fatty side up. In a small bowl, mix together the garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper and thyme. Spread the mixture over the fatty layer of the roast, and let the roast sit out until it is at room temperature, no longer than 1 hour.
  2. Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F (260 degrees C).
  3. Bake the roast for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, then reduce the temperature to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C), and continue roasting for an additional 60 to 75 minutes. The internal temperature of the roast should be at 145 degrees F (53 degrees C) for medium rare.
  4. Allow the roast to rest for 10 to 15 minutes before carving so the meat can retain it juices.

Hello From Assisting Living

When I read this poem, it makes me remember that everyone is a person, no matter what they are like. Please read this, and remember that everyone has a story to tell if you just take the time to listen.

Crabby Old Man

What do you see nurses?...What do you see?
What are you thinking…when your’re looking at me?
A crabby old man, …not very wise,
Uncertain of habit…with faraway eyes?

Who dribbles his food…and makes no reply.
When you say in a loud voice…”I do wish you’d try!”
Who seem not to notice…the things that you do.
And forever is losing…..a sock or shoe?

Who, resisting or not….lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding….the long day to fill?
Is that what your’re thinking? Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse…your’re not looking at me.

Heads Up on a Rash of Telemarketing Calls

The odds that you will receive an unwanted phone call about diabetes testing supplies are going up quickly.  Senior Medicare Patrol has received MANY reports from all around the state that telemarketers are phoning – they are persistent and convincing.

According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, 26.9% of persons age 65 and over had diabetes last year.  So, when a telemarketer or potential scam artist makes a call to retired persons, they have better than a one in four chance of reaching a person with diabetes.

Here are the things we encourage you to remember when you get an unexpected call from someone saying you can get free diabetes testing supplies if you are on Medicare.

  1. If you have not been a customer of the business, Medicare rules say they should not make cold calls to sell you medical supplies and then claim benefits from Medicare.  If possible, you should get the name of the caller the name of the business, the business address and phone number, then report this information to Senior Medicare Patrol at 1-800-423-2449.

And …..do not do business with them.

  1. If you are currently getting Medicare-covered items from a medical supply business they may call you and offer other supplies.  They’ll already have your Medicare number and physician name on record so please tell them you will talk with your doctor before making a decision about additional medical supplies or equipment.
  1. Do not accept a caller’s word if they say they’ve already OK’d this with your doctor or that

your doctor requested these supplies for you.  You or your family or personal representative should talk with you doctor first.

  1. Do not give your Medicare number and or physician’s name during a call that you did not

initiate.  You have no way of verifying the authenticity of the call and could be giving your valuable personal information to a scam artist.

  1. Do not let the “startle” factor get the best of you.  We have heard from so many seniors who were convinced to give personal information because they answered a call before they got up in the morning or while napping or heard the phone ring while on the porch or in the garden and ran to answer it quickly.  It’s human nature to let your guard down when you are surprised, in a hurry or not feeling sharp due to sleepiness or poor health.

No one besides you and your doctor or other health care provider you are working with, should make decisions about what medical supplies you need or where you should buy them, even if Medicare pays the full charge.
