Highlighting our Assisted Living Program

Please congratulate our Assisted Living Staff at the Village at Legacy Pointe for a deficiency free survey this year. This is a wonderful accomplishment and speaks columes about the quality of care our Assisted Living Provides.

Unfortunately there are times when our spouse or loved one needs care beyond what we can provide at home.

Assisted Living could be a possible solution to this problem and relieve care givers of the many tasks of trying to provide for their loved ones at home.

Many of us hope to stay in our homes as we grow older, and often with age, we are requiring assistance with everyday activities such as shopping, cooking, bathing and sometimes our need requires more and more help on a regular basis.

MaggieIf you have experience an increased need with daily activities or maybe recently added a handrail, grab bars to the bathroom, made plans for a home health aide to come to the house.

Activities – Memory Lane
Ashley Rosenberg

Summer is finally here and we have been enjoying the summernice weather here at Memory Lane. We have been taking advantage of the sunny days by soaking our feet in a wading pool on our outdoor patio and enjoying cool refreshments.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve talked about various themes that involve summer, which include beaches, oceans, camping, and fishing.  Every week we discuss a new theme and have a party at the end of the week. We have taken a couple field trips to McDonalds for Lunch and recently have gone on a picnic to a park nearby.

We have recently welcomed new residents, Deloris Carman and Leo Classen.

We are looking forward to the 4th of July and will be celebrating with a picnic and fun crafts! We hope everyone is enjoying their summer as much as we are. Have a safe and happy 4th of July!

Ashley Rosenberg,  Activities Coordinator

Community Liaison

It was announced at the Residence Council meeting that I have officially accepted the position of Community Liaison.

I thought you would want to know a little about me.
I have been a Registered Nurse since 1979. My most experience (14 yrs) has been in Hospice Care. I also worked for an insurance company, in hospitals and another Assisted Living facility.

I am married to my high school sweetheart and we have three married children, six grandchildren an 2 infant great grandchildren.

Now down to business:  Being available for tours on Saturday mornings for the month of June has been very successful. Those that have toured appear to be very interested in our community. They are impressed with the friendliness of you, our residents, your smiles and willingness to assist in any way.

Hello from Assisted Living

Assisted Living has begun to spring to life. We have planted flowers on the patio, new mulch has been put down, and the grounds are looking beautiful. The table is out with the chairs and the umbrella is up. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate so  we can sit outside without melting from all the rain or blowing away from all the wind that we have had.

This is Iowa, and we’re also known for flooding, and it is happening again. Be careful with all the rain. When driving, stay a car length behind the car in front of you giving you plenty of room to stop when needed. Also remember to never cross a flooded road, as you do not know how high the water will be, this could cause you bigger problems than having to find an alternate route. Always make sure you listen to the news or radio so you can better plan your day.

As always, we hope to keep you and the residents safe. Have a great summer.

Courtney, RN Coordinator

Pack a Picnic

You only need a few things to make a picnic memorable: sunshine, good company, and a cooler full of your favorite foods.

food1. Keep things simple by limiting beverages to one or two choices (iced tea, lemonade.)

  1. Punch
  2. Iced Tea
  3. Strawberry lemonade

food2. Make up one or two side salads. Go with old favorites or try salads that add a few fun flavor twists to the traditional recipe.

  1. Potato and Bacon Salad
  2. Seven Layer Salad
  3. Coleslaw

food3.  Include at least one main dish salad with meat or fish. Or offer a meat dish (cold fried chicken, luncheon meats) on the side instead.

  1. Southern Fried Chicken
  2. Barbecue Chicken Salad
  3. Cold Tuna Macaroni Salad

4. Make low-fuss one-dish desserts. Even when they call themselves salads, these offerings can satisfy any sweet tooth.

Happy July & August!watering can

Here it is July already! Our garden is doing well with the warm weather and we are all looking forward to having some fresh tomatoes, onions, and radishes. We have had some fun events the last couple of months. In May we had the Mother’s Day fashion show, the children from DM Christian School put on an amazing history program, and a trip to Prairie Meadows. In June we had a presentation on the Ortonville Circus and our Father’s Day Party which was a baseball theme. Events to look forward to in July and August will be an Independence Party, homemade ice cream, and our own State Fair Celebration. Continue to watch the bulletin boards and activity calendars for all the upcoming events.

Please let me know if any of you have any ideas or suggestions for activities.  Thank You.

The Assisted Living had their state survey on April 11th, 2011 and I am proud to say we passed with no deficiencies. We are very proud to have the group of employees working in the AL that we have.

I am always here if anyone has any concerns, please feel free to come and speak with me.

The Mind-It’s a Terrible Thing to Waste,
(And a Wonderful Tool to Use!)

So you were recently hanging out with your neighbor, drinking some coffee in the backyard and chatting. Two days later you find out she has the flu. Being the germophobe you are, you begin to wonder if you are going to get sick now. Then you begin obsessing about it. You can’t be sick! You have that important date this weekend with that swimsuit model! You think maybe your throat feels a little scratchy. The more you obsess about it the more you are SURE your throat feels scratchy. And didn’t your neighbor say she had the chills? Wait a minute! Now you have the chills! Oh, my gosh-you ARE sick!

Are you really? Maybe, maybe not. It is amazing what the mind can do to you physically. People who go around saying, “I never get sick” are probably telling you the truth. These are the people who confidently sit next to the guy at work wrapped in a blanket and sneezing up a storm. They don’t give it a second thought because they know they will be fine.

How is that possible? It’s actually quite simple. Your mind is not a separate entity from your body; it is a part of your body. It is also made up of cells, and nerves and a little fatty tissue, just like the rest of you. Think of it like this; if you constantly sit at a desk all day you have a high likelihood of having problems with headaches. Your body is one continuous flowing entity. What happens in one area can greatly affect another area. When you sit on your butt all day you compress the nerves down there. The nerves travel to the spinal column and then shoot out to other areas. When you have to sit all day your bottom can only take so much stress so it sends pain signals to another area to give your bottom area some relief. That area is often the brain because so many nerves reside there.

Now turn this idea around. You start to fret because you were around a sick person. Your brain gets more and more wrapped up in the worry of potential illness until it can’t handle the stress anymore and sends signals somewhere else in your body to give the brain some relief. The stress of the brain manifests itself in true illness because the brain has “transferred” its stress elsewhere which compromises that area enough to cause a real sickness. Wrapped up in a nutshell-you can think yourself into sickness.

“It is the mission of The Village at Legacy Pointe to offer to all seniors a community of service fostering the principles of individuality, respect, empowerment, and choice.”
